Silent Voices were a series of sound and video installation created by the young people who access Charlie's YMCA drop-in centre in Eastbourne giving them a platform to be heard. Silent Voices is a Rhythmix project delivered in partnership with Towner Art Gallery and East Sussex Music Service and was supported using public funding by Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts.

Jacy Kilvert, Charlies YMCA

The sound pieces that we heard yesterday are an extraordinary achievement the fact that we have such moving personal accounts and sound recordings from the young people is due to the respect and dignity given to the young people on this project… This project has asked young people to think about concepts that were previously alien to them to think outside of their day to day troubles and express themselves through sound which would then be installed in Eastbourne for all to hear. The young people on this project met this challenge and gave sound to their lives and want Eastbourne to hear it.

Cllr Neil Stanley

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said “We are very excited to invite people to the Silent Voices exhibition this weekend and offer something completely different for visitors to Towner. Silent Voices is not only an exhibition, it’s a completely unique experience, where visitors can really interact with the installations, since they are a combination of sound and video.”
